“…the birds and the beasts were there, the big baboon by the light of the moon was combing his auburn hair. The monkey he got drunk and sat on the elephant’s trunk. The elephant sneezed and fell on his knees, and what became of the monkey, monkey, monk…”
This song is probably politically incorrect these days for some reason or other! Sunday found us at the Orange County Fair, not really the animal fair, but to be fair, there were animals there. Whew, that’s a tongue twister! Mom, Melody, Auntie and Grandma A spent the day browsing the shops, eating the treats, and looking at the various animals – goats, pigs, chickens, and yes, elephants!
Melody rode an elephant. Early in the day – let me just say that getting there at opening time is the best! – we wandered over to the petting zoo and elephants. She was really interested in them, since she knows elephants from her books. We rode the elephant, with Melody sitting right in the front. The (first) elephant was named Kitty and she gave us a nice ride. Later in the day, we went back and rode again (because the pony ride was outrageously expensive!) but the second time we rode (I think) Sophia. Melody didn’t like this ride as much because there were a lot of children in line by this point and she wasn’t able to sit up front and see. She may also have been a bit more scared because she gripped the shirt of the boy in front of us. He was very nice, talked to her and ignored the holes she clawed into his shirt. Just kidding, no holes, but he did talk to her and point out interesting things. We got a little video which I will post later. After this ride, Auntie took her on a fun train ride that was a little more Melody’s speed.
We really enjoyed looking at the goats, pigs, chickens, and sheep. Not too long ago, Melody was pretty afraid of these animals, but now, not so much. She was still hesitant to pet them but she did touch the head of a goat and the ear of a sheep. She also wasn’t climbing inside Mom’s shirt to get away like last time she encountered a goat and a pig (see Santa Ana Zoo video, lol). Melody also was naming the animals and telling us what they say. She very much enjoyed her “a-mals.”
Melody walked much of the day with her little backpack and tether. Of course, almost as soon as Mom got on the freeway she realized she may have actually left the tether at home, and upon getting to the fair checked, yep, no tether. So, Mom and Auntie went to the nearest pet products booth and bought a leash, lol. It is the same color as the one that really goes with the backpack and no one could tell. Mom finds it funny that Melody really was on a leash, which would affront all the wacko moms in one of her Mom Groups. :-)
The day ended with ice cream, ahhhh. It was so fun! Mom is a little sunburned, Melody was exhausted but happy, Auntie and Grandma were too.
